Lesvos is the third largest island in Greece with a wide variety of breathtaking landscapes.
Discover the island’s natural beauty by walking with Poliana along traditional kalderimis (ancient footpaths), donkey trails, and unpaved roads through the mountains and valleys. You will trek through sunlit olive groves and pine forests, along streams and rivers and past hidden monasteries and picturesque mountain villages, enjoying a rare silence interrupted only by the sound of bird song and sheep bells.

In springtime, carpets of colorful wild flowers cover the landscape, and, all year round, you can enjoy the wonderful smell of fresh herbs as you brush past them.

The duration of the walks (excluding breaks) vary from 3 to 5 hours, depending on the rhythm and interests of the group. The walks will be accompanied by Els Meas, anthropologist who has been living and working on Lesvos since 1985. Fluent in four languages, Dutch, English, German and Greek, she can give you a fascinating range of information  about the lives and traditions of the Greek villagers.

There is usually a lunch break(not included in the price) in one of the villages visited ,after finishing the walks. This is a great way to get acquainted with the wide variety of the local gastronomy, which is both healthy and tasty ; a true reward for your efforts.
The walks can be booked individually as well as by group. There is a minimum of 4 participants, with a maximum of 12 (unless by larger group booking).
Upon request Poliana offers tailor made walking tours. In this case a small transfer fee  or no fee will be charged depending on the area where the walks will take place ,and on the group size, in which case the transfer will be arranged by taxi, car or minibus.

Poliana also offers a 7- day  week /walking program, which includes both walks and overnight stays in the area of Petra as well as Agiassos (stunning mountain village in the central- south part of Lesvos).
We also  offer programs combining walking and painting. We are currently preparing package programs with gastronomy / walking and  with greek language / walking.
We recommend the walking treks only for people in good physical condition. It is also recommended to wear  trousers and suitable walking shoes (no sneakers). Also bring a sunhat, light snacks and plenty of water. Because of possible rainy days  during early spring and autumn, we advise to bring a hooded raincoat / poncho.
Altough the walking routes are not hazardous, accidents can always occur. Poliana is not liable  for any damages during the walks. This should be covered by your travel insurance.

The starting point is the village of Petra. Transfer can be arranged in case you are not staying there.

The village of Petra, located on the north-west coast, has a large sand/pebble beach. The village is dominated by a huge rock from which the village gets its name upon where the beautiful church of Holy Mary is situated, accessible by climbing 114 steps .
The village square, the byzantine St Nicolas church, the towering rock with its church, the small alleys, the old and impressive mansions dated from 19th and 20th century, the traditional taverns on the coast boulevard and in the centre ,all make up the quaint character of the village. Tradition and tourism are still in balance and the visitor will feel immediately at home.

For your overnight stay in Petra we fully recommend the small and attractive apartment complex, called Lassia.
Through travel agencies it is possible to book a total holiday package (all included: flight, accommodation and transfer from and to the airport).
The distance from the airport to Petra is 65 kms. The bus transfer takes about 1½ hours.
It is also possible to book your own holidays independently. In this case , the owner of Lassia apartment complex would arrange special rates for participants of the Poliana-program.
If you care to walk with Poliana outside the tourist season, you will have to book your flight via Athens or Thessaloniki. If needed, Poliana will assist you in finding another accommodation, since Lassia does not open off- season.
The complex is located on a hillside, surrounded by a lovely garden,appr.1 km from the sea and centre of the village of Petra. It consists of several buildings, each of them housing 4 to 6 studios, built in such a manner that privacy and tranquility are guaranteed.
Facilities include swimmingpool, restaurant(with traditional cuisine, the owner is a top chef),bar and lounge. The rooms are  large, equipped with bathroom with shower and wc, A/C(excl.7 e p. day), TV and kitchenette. All rooms have a big terrace or balcony with either sea view or mountain/garden view.
